Ninguna oscuridad se asentaría jamás sobre aquellas lámparas, como ninguna oscuridad se había asentado sobre ellas durante cientos de años. Parecía espantoso que la ciudad ardiera para siempre en el mismo lugar; espantoso al menos para la gente que se alejaba para aventurarse en el mar, y la contemplaba como un montículo circunscrito, eternamente quemado, eternamente marcado. Desde la cubierta del barco, la gran ciudad aparecía como una figura agazapada y cobarde, un miserable sedentario.
